about

The soundscape is made using a Raspberry Pi computer and some software I have written. With this code I can put in as many source recordings as I wish; the computer then decides how many smaller clips it is going to make from the originals. It then generates those smaller clips and decides how long they will be and from which section of the original. Once the clips are generated they are played back at various intervals, faded in and / or out, set to sound at a particular volume and location in the stereo field. This is very similar to Musique Concrète techniques and produces a work that is multi-layered and built from existing recordings. So, in this version you can hear (on multiple occasions) water flowing in a ford, the hum of a sub-station, a train, a car, a motorbike, birds tweeting and some wind noise (amongst others).

The software was originally written for a project that I did during the first lockdown period where I created a Covid-19 soundmap of recordings that I made in various locations as I did my daily exercise. This project can be viewed / listened to here:

Simon Belshaw Exeter, UK

Simon Belshaw has studied composition with Gavin Bryars completing a PhD in 2005.

Simon has always been more interested in the fallibility of systems and, as Nyman wrote about John White’s music, ‘… being English they are ambling, friendly, self-effacing systems, which may break down …’ ... more
